Slippery Elm (Ulmus Rubra)
Type: Plant
Latin Name: Ulmus Rubra
Slippery elm is a tree native to the central and eastern United States and Ontario, Canada.
It's slimy inner bark has been traditionally use to treat fever, wound and sore throat.
When the bark is mixed with water, it produces a sticky material known as mucilage and is a natural demulcent (mucoprotective agents), which can soothe the lining of the stomach and intestines, and reduce irritation.
Studies have shown that slippery elm bark has positive effect towards inflammatory bowel diseases, such as crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Slippery elm also benefits heartburn by coating the esophagus and help prevent the irritation and inflammation that occurs when stomach acid flows up the esophagus.
